Does the URL of a webpage impact it’s ranking on search engines?
webpageenginesentirelyproductEG if i have a webpage about cricket and it’s called
www.randomwebsite.com/cricket
is it more likely to appear higher in a search engine ranking (like google)
than the same page but called
www.randomwebsite.com/jsdkl43jks
Technically, it doesn’t effect its ranking so much as it effects the ease with which it can be ranked.
Most search engines give more weight to sites which have the words being searched for in the URL.
www.cricket.com/how-to-play-cricket would be fairly easy to rank up for cricket.
However, it is still entirely possible to get www.randomwebsite.com/jsdkl43jks to show up above the first one. If everything else were the same, your jsdkl43jks URL would require more (or better) backward links and traffic to outrank your cricket URL.
By using something totally random, you simply make it take more effort to get your site ranked up in search engines than if you chose targeted names.

Yes. The url must match the theme of the website for higher keyword ranking. For example; a url containing word travel will return higher keyword ranking for travel.

Another factor to consider is the age of the domain.
If you already own http://www.randomwebsite.com and it is established in the search index, your example, http://www.randomwebsite.com/cricket, would likely do better quicker than a new domain with cricket in the actual domain name.
This is provided that by "randomwebsite" you mean generic web site. The above would not necessarily apply if your domain is clearly targeted at another market e.g. http://www.doubleglazing.com/cricket
PS I’m wondering why you would even consider naming a page about cricket http://www.randomwebsite.com/jsdkl43jks

Hi Matt,
Yes it does. better to have the keyword in the main domain name too, but just in the subpage URL is good too.
Of course, you need the keyword in the content of that page too as well as in the meta tags. Then you’re really talking!
